Starting July 1, Republic Services will provide your trash, recycling and organic waste services in the City of Carlsbad.

  • Your trash collection day will remain the same
  • Look on the lid of your new trash carts to know what goes in each bin
  • In the coming weeks, Republic Services will mail you a complete guide to your new trash, recycling and organic waste services, including information on bulky item pick-up, e-waste and household hazardous waste.
Compost food scraps, other "organics" starting July 1
A new state law requires all residents to compost “organic materials” such as food scraps, egg shells, and food-soiled paper and containers (like pizza boxes), along with yard clippings and other green waste.
organic recycling
Organic waste will be turned into compost, which will be available to residents for free to use in their gardens and yards during annual compost giveaway events.
Kitchen caddies
  • One free kitchen caddy per household will be available for pick up at locations throughout the city, starting the last week of June. More details coming from Republic Services soon.
  • Kitchen caddies make it convenient to collect food scraps, which can be dumped later into your green compost cart.
  • You can use your own container or the free one provided by Republic Services.
  • Each kitchen caddy will have a label showing what food scraps you can put in your compost cart.
Why the change?
  • The city issued a request for proposals to provide waste collection services when its existing contract with Waste Management was set to expire.
  • The city received two proposals, one from Republic and one from EDCO.
  • Both companies were deemed qualified to perform the services.
  • After reviewing both proposals, the City Council chose Republic Services.
New carts
  • Republic Services started exchanging the carts owned by Waste Management for new City of Carlsbad carts at the end of March.
  • All carts will be swapped out by July 1.
