Trash service changes start Friday
On Friday, Republic Services will take over from Waste Management as the City of Carlsbad’s new trash, recycling and organic waste services provider. We’ve been working hard this past year to make the transition as smooth as possible and we appreciate all you're doing, too.
- In the coming weeks, Republic Services will mail all residents and businesses a complete guide to their new trash, recycling and organic waste services, including information on bulky item pick-up, e-waste and household hazardous waste.
- Residential trash collection days will remain the same.

By tomorrow (July 1), everyone should have received their new trash carts. If you haven't received yours, please contact Republic Services at 760-332-6464. Waste Management carts may not be serviced in the coming weeks.
- Look on your carts for information about what goes in each bin.
- If you need to request a replacement cart, a different sized cart or have questions, contact Republic Services.
- Republic Services will provide regular service on July 4.

New food waste collection
With the start of our new trash service, all residents and businesses will begin disposing of “organic materials” such as food scraps, eggshells, and food-soiled paper and containers (like pizza boxes) in the green compost cart along with yard waste.
This change is to comply with a new state law requiring cities to recycle organic waste. Republic’s coordinators have already started visiting Carlsbad businesses to let them know about the new organic recycling law and services.

Free kitchen caddies for residents
To make food scrap recycling a little easier, Carlsbad residents can pick up a free kitchen caddy at various locations throughout the city. These small, plastic bins can be used to store leftover food scraps in the kitchen before putting them in the green compost cart.
The caddy can be stored under the sink, on the counter or in the fridge or freezer. To avoid unwanted pests, keep kitchen caddy lids closed when not in use. Kitchen caddies can be easily cleaned in the dishwasher.

Next steps for south Carlsbad Boulevard
Earlier this year, we asked you to share your priorities for a 3-mile stretch of south Carlsbad Boulevard from Manzano Drive to La Costa Avenue, including the road itself and the public land that could be freed up if the road were reconfigured. Many of you said that if changes were made, you wanted safer bike lanes, wider walking paths and a safer way to cross the road.
Now we'd like your feedback on three roadway designs for a 1-mile stretch of south Carlsbad Boulevard, from Manzano Drive to Island Way only, that prioritizes walking and biking along the coast while protecting the roadway from the effects of sea level rise.
The roadway options were created as part of a project funded by the California State Coastal Conservancy and focus on changes to the roadway, not the land that could be repurposed by moving the road east.

TGIF concert tips
If you’re attending the TGIF Concerts in the Park this week at Stagecoach Community Park, please plan ahead and arrive early. It’s the start of the Fourth of July holiday weekend, so crowds may be larger than usual. I shared these reminders last week, but they’re worth repeating because we want everyone to enjoy their concert experience.
- Field will open at 4 p.m. Concert starts at 6 p.m.
- Free parking at La Costa Canyon High School across the street and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which is just down the road from the park on Camino de los Coches.
- No shuttle service for concerts at Stagecoach because we have parking close by.
- Consider getting dropped off or carpooling to ease traffic.
- Don’t forget to pack a picnic – no food and drink vendors this season.
- Please leave your furry friends at home.
- It never hurts to bring bug spray just in case

Help with home projects
If you need help with some projects around your home or business this summer, the City of Carlsbad has a unique program that connects people who need jobs with people who need workers.
The Carlsbad Service Center hosts the Carlsbad Hiring Center, where residents and employers can hire day laborers and other workers for jobs that range from landscaping and maintenance to full-time manufacturing work. The center is managed by Interfaith Community Services and the City Council just approved a new contract with Interfaith on June 21.
How it works
- You can call or visit the center to discuss job needs and make hiring arrangements.
- The hiring center staff, the employer and the worker will negotiate work duties and pay. The expected pay rate is at least California minimum wage, but rates may vary depending on the job.
- The center has onsite, bilingual staff to help connect residents and employers with the most qualified workers.
- Anyone seeking work through the center has been verified by Interfaith to be eligible for employment in the United States.
- Workers can be hired for jobs such as carpentry, plumbing, painting, landscaping, janitorial services, moving, event prep and more.

The next City Council meeting will be Tuesday, July 12, at 5 p.m. in the City Council chamber. The agenda will be posted on the city’s website the Friday before the meeting.

7 important Fourth of July reminders
The Fourth of July holiday weekend can be a busy one in Carlsbad, and we want it to be a safe one, too. The Carlsbad Police Department will be out keeping an eye on things over the long holiday weekend and is sharing these important reminders to help keep our community safe:
- Fireworks – Don’t discharge fireworks. It’s illegal and a big fire hazard. Leave fireworks to the professionals.
- Beaches – No alcohol or dogs on beaches; fires are only allowed in sanctioned fire pits.

Alcohol – Designate a driver or use rideshare services. Providing alcohol to minors at parties is against the city's Social Host Ordinance. Please report drunk drivers to 911.
- Personal belongings – If you cannot take personal belongings with you and keep an eye on them, leave them at home.
- Home security – Before you leave home, close, and lock your windows and doors.
- Bicycles – Follow the rules of the road or risk getting a ticket. Lock up your bicycle and keep an eye on it. Put your bike securely away when you arrive home.
- Partnerships – Report suspicious activity by calling our 24-Hour Non-Emergency Hotline at 760-931-2197.

City offices will be closed on Monday, July 4, for the Independence Day holiday. A full holiday schedule for city services is listed below:
- City offices: Closed
- Emergency services: Regular service
- Trash pickup: Regular service
- City pools: Alga Norte, 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Monroe Street, 6 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
- Libraries and Cultural Arts facilities: Closed
- Community centers: Closed
- Senior Center: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; no meal service.
- Leo Carrillo Ranch: Regular hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
