Shop safely this holiday season - here's how.

Post Date:11/16/2022

The holidays are upon us and that means more and more shoppers will visit our many popular shopping areas. With this increase comes an increased risk for holiday shopping related crime as well as more people using local roads. The Police Department is prepared and wants you to be too.

During the holiday season the Police Department will increase patrol around Carlsbad’s main shopping areas. The department is looking to deter shopping related crime like thefts from vehicles, thefts from shoppers, shoplifting and fraud. Our presence will also serve as a reminder for all road users to follow safety rules and look out for one another.

The community is an important part of the team. Here are some easy tips

Headed out to shop

  • Pack your patience. Shopping areas will be crowded.

  • Clear your car of all personal items before you head out.
  •

  • Respect the rules of the road. Share the road and everyone will be successful.
  • Watch for pedestrians and bicyclists.
  • Stop at crosswalks. Give pedestrians the right-of-way.
  • Stop completely at stop signs and traffic signals.
  • Drive slowly in parking lots and follow directions.
  • Park carefully, as close to your destination at possible and under a light at night.
  • When possible, move your car closer to your destination.
  • Always lock your car and take the keys. Check twice that it is locked.
  • Use shuttles and security if you must travel a distance to your car.

Shopping considerations

  • Plan for safety. Shop early and shop safely.
  • Dress comfortably and leave the expensive jewelry at home.
  • Carry limited cash and only the necessary credit cards.
  • Consider a crossbody purse to keep your hands free.
  • Shop with a friend; there is safety in numbers.
  • Consider who might be watching you put packages in the trunk of your car. Move your car to a different parking spot.
  • Avoid distractions and always be aware of who and what is going on around you. If you don’t like what you see, change your direction.
  • Keep an eye on your purse, wallet and purchases while shopping.
  • Keep your arms free by not overloading them with packages.
  • Watch your checking account and credit card accounts carefully.

Working together we can ensure everyone has a safe and happy holiday season. We will see you out there.
