Carlsbad Reads Together is an annual celebration connecting the entire Carlsbad community through reading. Special programming and events for Carlsbad Reads Together begin in April, but you can start reading today!

Carlsbad Reads Together is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Carlsbad Library.

Adult selection - “The Line Becomes a River” by Francisco Cantú

Selected with input from some of the most engaged library patrons, the 2023 Carlsbad Reads Together adult selection is “The Line Becomes a River” by Francisco Cantú. This true story of a U.S. Border Patrol Agent’s experience on the front lines of the U.S.-Mexico border presents a nuanced, balanced view of courage and compassion in the line of duty. Readers may reserve a copy from Carlsbad City Library, available in English and Spanish, in book, eBook or eAudiobook formats.

Save the date: on April 27 at 6 p.m., we'll be hosting a virtual visit with Francisco Cantú! More information to come.

Teen selection - “Unearthed: A Jessica Cruz Story” by Lilliam Rivera

The 2023 Carlsbad Reads Together teen selection is the graphic novel “Unearthed: A Jessica Cruz Story” by Lilliam Rivera, available on Hoopla and in the library catalog. “Unearthed” reimagines the story of DC Comics’ Green Lantern Jessica Cruz with a tale of immigration, family and overcoming fear to inspire hope. Free copies of “Unearthed” will be available for pickup at all three Carlsbad City Library facilities while supplies last; complete this form to request a copy or email libraryteens@carlsbadca.gov for more details.

Children's selection - “Bright Star” by Yuyi Morales

Carlsbad Reads Together engages the entire community in reading, discussion and delightful programming for all ages. The children’s selection for this year is “Bright Star” by Yuyi Morales, the story of a fawn making her way through a landscape teeming with flora and fauna inspired by our region. This book is available in English and Spanish, perfect for very young children looking for their place in a world full of uncertainty. Reserve a copy from the Carlsbad City Library or enjoy on Hoopla in eAudiobook or readalong format.
