We need your help!

National traffic safety trends show a dramatic increase in traffic-related deaths, with the first quarter of 2022 showing the highest number of deaths in two decades.

The City of Carlsbad's traffic safety emergency proclamation allowed us to focus increased resources and attention on the three Es of traffic safety, education, engineering and enforcement, using the framework of the Safer Streets Together Plan.

School traffic safety partnerships

Post Date:03/07/2023 4:41 PM

As part of the City of Carlsbad’s ongoing traffic safety efforts, the city is partnering with local schools to raise awareness of the rules of the road.

Through these partnerships, students of all ages are learning how to stay safe on the road, whether they are walking to school, riding a bike or e-bike, or even learning how to drive.

Teaming up with the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition and Circulate San Diego, the city is offering:

  • In-person, interactive assemblies focused on pedestrian safety or bike and e-bike safety
  • Bike rodeos, where kids can practice bike safety skills in a safe and supportive environment
  • Virtual webinars with tips for helping kids stay safe whether they are biking, walking or learning to drive
  • Sample emails with safety messages for parents
  • Banners on school fences reminding everyone to be safe, slow down and share the road

Upcoming events

In the weeks ahead, the city is planning more events where students, parents and anyone in the community can learn more about staying safe on the road, whether they are walking, biking or driving.

On Thursday, March 16, the City of Carlsbad, Carlsbad Unified School District, San Diego County Bicycle Coalition and Circulate San Diego are teaming up for a Parent University webinar about traffic safety. During this one-hour virtual webinar as part of the Parent University series, you will learn:

  • The top causes of local collisions and how to prevent them
  • How to talk to your kids about safety
  • 3 simple ways to improve safety when walking, driving and biking
  • Carlsbad-specific e-bike rules and what happens if you break them
  • The very best way to motivate teens to follow traffic rules (It’s not what you think)

Student perspectives
The city is speaking with community members, including students and school principals, about why traffic safety matters to them, and what they are doing to stay safe on the road.

Here are a few perspectives from local middle school students, Hazel and Jayden, and Aviara Oaks Middle School Principal, Rose.
