World Oceans Day

Post Date:06/06/2024 1:17 PM

The City of Carlsbad is committed to environmental sustainability and preserving the beauty of our coastline every day. Taking care of our natural resources is a key part of our City Council’s 5-Year Strategic Plan.

With World Oceans Day on Saturday, it’s the perfect time to think about the important role the Pacific Ocean plays in our lives and how we can help protect it, including through education.

  • Over the past year, more than 1,600 students in Carlsbad learned about the importance of protecting our waterways through a classroom education program the city supports.
  • Through the program, students learn how to keep pollution out of our watershed – land areas that drain into creeks, lagoons and eventually the ocean.
  • As part of their lessons, students from first grade through high school complete projects with sustainable solutions to reduce trash and other pollutants at school and in their neighborhoods.

Some of the posters from Kelly Elementary School students were shared at a recent meeting of regional watershed officials.

Stormwater protection is crucial all year round, not just when storms are approaching. During dry months, pollutants like oil, debris, and chemicals can accumulate on surfaces, and when it eventually rains or when runoff flows down the street, these pollutants are washed directly into our waterways. Here are a few ways you can help keep pollution out of the waterways this summer:

  • Check your sprinklers to prevent water waste and runoff.
  • If possible, wash your car at a commercial car wash, where wash water is filtered and recycled. This allows the water to filter through the ground instead of running directly into the storm drain, where pollutants like soap, oil and dirt can travel to the ocean.
  • If you wash your car at home, park it off the street and on grass or gravel if available, and use as little soap as possible. Use organic fertilizers and pesticides. Runoff from gardens and landscaping can pollute waterways and harm marine life.
