We've just launched our first redistricting survey and are asking you to help us define the communities that should stay together for the purposes of electing a City Council member, starting with next November’s election.

The goal of the survey is to identify communities that share common social and economic interests, called communities of interest, that should be kept in the same City Council district. Some examples of elements that define communities of interest are:
  • Shared interests in schools, housing, community safety, health conditions, transit and/or other issues
  • Common social and civic networks, including churches, homeowner associations and community centers
  • Racial and ethnic compositions and cultural identities
  • Socio-economic status, including but not limited to homeownership and education levels

Other ways to get involved
Carlsbad is going beyond state requirements for public input and providing multiple ways to learn about the process and share your feedback.

Next steps
  • Once the census data becomes available, currently estimated in late September/early October, the city will provide mapping tools that will let you create suggested new district boundaries.
  • We'll also have two workshops Oct. 23 to go over how to use the map tools.
