The Arts Commission advises the City Council on the implementation of the arts element of the Carlsbad General Plan. Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Encouraging individuals and organizations that provide an educational experience in the arts for the citizens
• Providing direction and support for continued development and presentation of a variety of arts in the city
• Providing a forum for arts concerns and recommendations to the elected officials and their staff concerning arts issues
• Reviewing and making recommendations upon all works of art to be acquired by the city, either by commission, purchase, gift or otherwise, and their proposed locations

The commission consists of seven members appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the City Council. Members must be residents of Carlsbad and normally serve four-year terms.

How to participate

Comment in person

If you would like to provide comments to the Arts Commission, please:

• Fill out a speaker request form, located in the foyer.
• Submit the form to the Clerk before the item begins.
• When it’s your turn, the Clerk will call your name and invite you to the podium.
• Speakers have three minutes, unless the presiding officer changes that time.
• You may not give your time to another person, but groups can select a single speaker as long as three other members of your group are present. Group representatives have 10 minutes unless that time is changed by the presiding officer.

• If you wish to provide written comments as part of the record, e-mail your comments to arts@carlsbadca.gov. Please indicate the agenda item number in your e-mail subject line.
• Emails received by 4 p.m. will be provided to the Arts Commission prior to the start of the meeting.
• Other comments will be included with the meeting record. Emailed comments will not be read out loud during the meeting.
