Services and responsibilities

The Ocean Lifeguard Division was established in 2017 and serves an area called "North Beach," a previously unguarded stretch of beach. Now, the Carlsbad Fire Department has four lifeguard towers staffed during the summer months and, dependent on conditions, into early fall. This division is staffed by roughly 30 seasonal guards, two full-time Paramedic Lifeguard Lieutenants and is managed by a Division Chief.

The goal and mission of this division are to help keep the public safe along our city beaches and educate about the hazards and beauty of our coastline.

Visit our Beach Safety page for a map of our tower locations and public restrooms, along with the local surf report and other educational resources.

Tower Locations

The four tower locations which are seasonally staffed from springtime through October are as follows:

  • Tower 1 – Located at the “point” or the northern most border with Oceanside
  • Tower 2 – Located at the Army Navy Academy
  • Tower 3 – Located in the area of Beech Street
  • Tower 4 – Located at Carlsbad Village Drive

Hours of operation

The program provides year-round staffing during daytime hours and has after-hours response capability. The number of lifeguards on duty varies with the seasons and weather conditions.
