Free home energy assessment

Post Date:01/18/2023 10:21 AM

To highlight the city’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the city offers Carlsbad residents a free program to measure their home’s energy use and recommendations to conserve energy and save money.

How it works

Homeowners are invited to sign up to make a home energy score assessment appointment with a certified home energy score assessor who will visit the home to:

  • Evaluate current energy efficiency
  • Identify home improvements that can increase energy efficiency
  • Offer energy-saving tips for using lights, electronics and appliances
  • Provide recommendations for improving indoor air quality and comfort

Each home energy score assessment will take approximately two hours, depending on the size and age of the home. The report is free, and residents are under no obligation to implement the suggestions provided by the assessor. Residents can follow up with the recommendations on their own timeline and with their preferred vendors.

How to sign up

  • Appointments are first come, first served and are available while funding lasts.
  • To get started and secure your place in line for an appointment, fill out the application form

Expanding the program

To take advantage of an opportunity to potentially expand the Home Energy Score Assessment Program without additional cost to the city, the City Council recently approved an agreement with the Energy Council, a California joint powers authority who advocates for energy efficiency programs. Under the agreement, the Energy Council will help train more local certified technicians who could perform these home assessments.

If the current program runs out of funding, residents can still fill out the application form and will be notified as new appointments are available.
