The City of Carlsbad received two project awards from The American Society of Civil Engineers San Diego Section for outstanding public works projects:

• Outstanding Construction Project award for the Altamira Water Main Relocation 
• Outstanding Small Project award for the State Street Drainage Improvements 

The Altamira Water Main Relocation project rehabilitated and relocated a portion of a water main pipe beneath Interstate 5. Several city departments were involved, including the Carlsbad Municipal Water District, Construction Management & Inspection and Utilities to coordinate with Caltrans to sequence the work around on-going lane widening and storm drain construction. As a result, the project was completed on time and within budget.

The State Street Drainage Improvements project addressed issues with storm-related flooding in the heart of downtown Carlsbad. To prevent future flooding, the project team installed a new pipe and storm drainage system, along with other improvements along the highly traveled segment of State Street between Carlsbad Village Drive and Grand Avenue. The city worked directly with affected businesses and the local business association to make sure the area was still accessible and safe during construction. Public Works Week 

Public Works staff help keep Carlsbad a strong community by providing a variety of infrastructure services in transportation, water, wastewater and stormwater treatment, public buildings and spaces, parks and grounds and solid waste. 

Award winning projects like those awarded ASCE awards demonstrate the city’s commitment to taking care of our streets and water and sewer system, being resourceful and responsible with city resources. 

Especially during Public Works Week, May 15-21, the City of Carlsbad recognizes its Public Works staff for their commitment contributing to the city’s high-quality level of service to the community.
