Update - Investigators seek witnesses of a fatal traffic collision involving a 4-Runner and an electric bike

Update – August 8, 2022

The Police Department is sorry to report that the female cyclist passed away from her injuries at the hospital.

Investigators are still seeking witnesses to the collision. If you were a witness, please call the Accident Investigator, Corporal Matt Bowen at 442-339-2282.

The department’s thoughts are with this family during this tragic time.

The investigation is ongoing.

On August 7, at 5:45 p.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department was called to the intersection of Basswood Avenue at Valley Street due to a traffic collision involving a vehicle and an electric bicycle.

On arrival, officers found a 35-year-old female electric bike cyclist injured near the intersection of Basswood Avenue and Valley Street. Traveling on the electric bicycle with the female was a 16-month-old female child. The child did not appear to be injured.

The driver of the Toyota 4-Runner, a 42-year-old female, remained at the scene.

The cyclist was transported to a local area hospital with serious injuries. The child was also transported as a precaution. 

The cause of the collision has yet to be determined. Drugs or alcohol are not considered to be a factor in the collision.

Police investigators are seeking additional witnesses to the collision.
