Celebrating seniors in Carlsbad

Post Date:08/25/2022

Sunday was National Senior Citizens Day, designed to recognize seniors and all they have accomplished and contributed to our society. In Carlsbad, we don’t just recognize older adults once a year, we’ve developed some great strategies and programs to help meet their needs, enhance their lives and celebrate their value all year long.

  • In December, the Carlsbad City Council approved North County’s first Age-Friendly Action Plan, a collaboration with AARP and Circulate San Diego.
  • The plan is a roadmap for how Carlsbad can make neighborhoods more walkable, provide transportation options, offer basic services and opportunities to participate in community activities, and support affordable and adaptable housing for people with special needs.
  • The City of Carlsbad also has a vibrant Senior Center at 799 Pine Avenue that is open six days a week to provide in person services, fun activities and a place to connect.
  • Carlsbad offers a senior lunch program at the center that provides nutritious weekday meals for area residents 60 and older. Registration is required for the lunch program and attendees must make a reservation by noon the weekday before service. Call 442-339-2650.
  • The city’s Carlsbad Transportation Service provides free or low-cost rides on certain days of the week to residents 60 and older who don’t drive and need transportation to the senior lunch program or medical appointments. Call 442-339-2650.
  • The city offers a wide range of classes, workshops and recreation programs for older adults, from Zumba and tai chi to technology tips and music and art programs. Registration is required. It’s easy to sign up on the city’s website.
  • The city publishes a monthly Seaside Insider newsletter with important information for seniors including special events and activities, class schedules, city resources and contacts, senior lunch menus and more. You can also sign up for the newsletter on the city’s website.
