Water utility scam alert

Post Date:01/17/2024 4:06 PM

The San Diego County Water Authority is warning community members about scams involving people posing as water agency “workers” to gain access to homes. These scams pop up from time to time, so it’s important to stay vigilant.

Carlsbad Municipal Water District employees will routinely take water samples for testing, but employees very rarely need to enter homes. Here are a few things to look out for if you’re approached by someone saying they are a CMWD employee:

  • CMWD employees will always be in uniform, wear a clearly marked ID badge and travel in a vehicle clearly marked with the city seal.
  • CMWD employees will always state the purpose of their visit and carry a business card with contact information.
  • Scammers might try to sell you on a specific commercial product. CMWD employees won’t endorse or attempt to sell any product.
  • We won’t call or visit your home to ask for payment information of any kind, including credit card numbers.

No reports of this activity have been received in Carlsbad yet, however, if you encounter someone who you think may be trying to scam you, call the 24/7 police non-emergency line at 442-339-2197. If you feel you are in danger, always call 9-1-1 immediately.

The Police Department’s website has more information about how to prevent crime around your home.
