Carlsbad redistricting commission close to choosing new district map

The Independent Redistricting Commission responsible for selecting the new Carlsbad City Council district boundaries will meet for its final public hearing next week, Feb. 17, to discuss potential maps and vote on new district boundaries. The potential maps are available online for residents to review and comment on at the hearing.   

  • The City of Carlsbad needs to update the boundaries of its four City Council districts based on the latest Census, so each district has about the same number of people. 

  • An independent redistricting commission will choose the new district map without involvement from the City Council.  

  • The deadline to adopt a new City Council district map is April 17, 2022. 

The public hearing will be livestreamed on the city’s website at 6 p.m. Instructions on how to provide live comments will be included on the meeting agenda.  

Choosing a map
The Independent Redistricting Commission has received more than 70 proposed maps from the public and the city’s demographer. After several meetings and a months-long public engagement process, the commission identified three maps to focus on at the final public hearing. The commission also directed the city’s demographer to create new variations of the focus maps that will be presented at the Feb. 17 hearing.  

At the final public hearing, the commission will discuss the potential maps and vote on new district boundaries. Although the commission has identified maps to focus on, it may choose one of the other posted maps as the final map. 

How to review and comment on maps
All maps submitted by the public and the city’s demographer are available on the city’s interactive map viewer,. Residents can review the maps and share feedback with the commission by emailing redistricting@carlsbadca.gov or commenting at the Feb. 17 public hearing. 

About the commission
The Carlsbad City Council decided to appoint an independent commission to choose a new City Council district map. Commission members were chosen from applications at random based on criteria established by the state and the City Council. The City Council also directed staff to go above and beyond the public outreach required by law to encourage Carlsbad community members to get involved the process, which happens just once every 10 years.
