Chestnut underpass public art map

At a glance

  • The city’s Cultural Arts Office is kicking off the planning process for new public art that will be located at the Chestnut Avenue I-5 underpass.
  • The undercrossing serves as one of the main entrances to the Barrio and links the neighborhoods around Holiday Park on the east side of the freeway and the city’s Barrio community on the west.
  • This will be the first permanent public art included at a freeway underpass in the City of Carlsbad.
  • In early January, a public art advisory subcommittee formed by the Cultural Arts Office selected the artist who will work with the community to create the public art.
  • The next step will be for the selected artist to gather public input in the spring to shape the public art design concept.
  • The public art project aligns with improvements to the Chestnut Avenue underpass, including a new bike lane and enhanced sidewalks. These street improvements are being built by Caltrans and SANDAG through the Build NCC project.
