District 1 City Council vacancy update
The City Council decided to proceed with an appointment process to fill the remainder of the term for the District 1 City Council vacancy. An election was estimated to cost between $450,000 and $650,000 and could not take place until next April. The City Council will finalize the appointment process

July is smart irrigation month

McMahon named Carlsbad City Attorney
The Carlsbad City Council announced Tuesday that Cindie McMahon will be Carlsbad’s next City Attorney, effective Aug. 2. McMahon, who currently serves as Assistant City Attorney, succeeds Celia A. Brewer, who announced her retirement in April.

Arrest made in lagoon fire
At about 12:40 p.m. Saturday, fire crews responded to a brush fire at the southwest edge of the Buena Vista Lagoon near Laguna Drive and Carlsbad Boulevard in Carlsbad.
