Genealogy Class – DNA Interest Group

The Priest and the Choir Girl Revisited: Searching for Family in an Endogamous Population

The DNA Interest Group is a special interest group designed to educate and inform people about the use of DNA testing for genealogical purposes. Topics are offered for all levels of computer/genealogy experience.

Presented by Kathleen Fernandes, Ph.D.

This presentation chronicles efforts to learn about the family of Joao Inacio da Silva who was a foundling born in 1861 in the Azores, an island group in the Atlantic Ocean west of Portugal. The geographic isolation of the islands has resulted in an endogamous population where relatives share more DNA than expected, reducing the applicability of standard methodologies and calling for the exploration of alternative analytic approaches.

This program is offered in-person and virtually.

In-person location: Georgina Cole Library Community Room, 1250 Carlsbad Village Drive, Carlsbad 92008

Register here to attend virtually.

Genealogy events are presented through a partnership between the Carlsbad City Library and the North San Diego County Genealogical Society (NSDCGS).
