Visual Phasing - How I Found My Grandfather

Presented by Sharon Ryan
Speaker will be in-person / Presentation will be recorded

Visual Phasing is a valuable genealogical tool that allows you to better understand DNA matches in any
chromosome browser (My Heritage, 23andme, Family Tree DNA, or Gedmatch). This process will enable
you to assign any DNA match in a chromosome browser to one of your four grandparents. In my case,
Visual Phasing was used to prove the identity of my paternal grandfather, who was previously unknown.

The DNA Interest Group is a partnership program between Carlsbad City Library and the North San Diego County Genealogical Society. This program is designed to educate and inform people about the use of DNA testing for genealogical purposes through lectures on DNA. The DNA Interest Group is open to people who have all levels of computer and genealogy experience.

The program is held the third Saturday of the month from January through November and is presented in person and virtually.

  • Doors open at 12:30 p.m. for social time.
  • Presentations, including question-and-answer sessions, are held from 1 to 2:30 p.m.
  • Breakout discussions and individualized help is usually available until 3 p.m.
