An Investigative Genetic Genealogy Case Study: the Sarah Hutching Homicide

Sarah Hutchings’s murder in Santa Rosa, CA was unsolved for 29 years until James Jobe was identified as the primary suspect through Investigative Genetic Genealogy in 2020. Hear the details of this fascinating case, including several interesting challenges, and follow the step-by-step process used to identify James Jobe as the perpetrator of this tragic crime.

The DNA Interest Group is a partnership program between Carlsbad City Library and the North San Diego County Genealogical Society. This program is designed to educate and inform people about the use of DNA testing for genealogical purposes through lectures on DNA. The DNA Interest Group is open to people who have all levels of computer and genealogy experience.

The program is held the third Saturday of the month from January through November and is presented in person and virtually.

  • Doors open at 12:30 p.m. for social time.
  • Presentations, including question-and-answer sessions, are held from 1 to 2:30 p.m.
  • Breakout discussions and individualized help is usually available until 3 p.m.
