2024 Carlsbad Business Survey is Open

The City of Carlsbad has launched its 2024 Carlsbad Business Survey. This survey is a confidential and convenient way for local business owners and leaders to share feedback about Carlsbad as a place to do business.

You can take the survey here: carlsbadca.gov/BusinessSurvey
It should only take about 15 minutes to complete.

About the Survey
  • The survey is intended for business owners, executive management, and senior leaders who have knowledge of the overall operations and direction of the business.
  • Responses will be anonymized and aggregated with other responses. No individual or business information will be shared or published.
  • The survey asks about different aspects of current business operations, such as workforce and hiring needs, access to clients and customers, and permitting and regulatory concerns. It also asks about future growth expectations and feedback on the business climate in Carlsbad.
  • The survey is conducted every two years to ensure the city understands current challenges and trends in the business community.
  • The City of Carlsbad appreciates your time and participation in this survey. Your feedback will help improve services and support for the local business community.
  • For any questions related to the survey, please contact our economic development team at business@carlsbadca.gov.

Thank you for taking the time to ensure the City of Carlsbad is better informed about the state of the business community!

New trash, recycling, organic waste service starts next month

Post Date:06/02/2022

On July 1, Republic Services will take over from Waste Management as the City of Carlsbad’s contracted waste hauler. In addition to collecting trash and recycling, their services will include organic waste collection and processing for all Carlsbad residents and businesses.

New food waste collection
On July 1, Carlsbad residents and businesses will begin disposing of their food scraps, food soiled paper and yard waste in their green compost cart. Until July 1, only yard waste should be disposed of in the green cart, while food soiled paper and other food waste continue to be disposed of in the grey trash cart.

Organic waste will be collected by Republic Services and composted at their Otay compost facility to create a nutrient-rich soil additive and mulch for public, private and city use.

This change is to comply with a new state law (SB1383) requiring cities to recycle organic waste. Republic’s coordinators have already started visiting Carlsbad businesses to let them know about the new organic recycling law and services and to determine how to best help them comply.

Cart changes
Republic Services started exchanging Waste Management residential carts for new City of Carlsbad carts at the end of March. All residents will receive communication regarding the scheduled date for their cart swap if they have not already been switched. Please put all carts out, even if they are not full, on your regularly scheduled collection day for the cart exchange.

If you need to request a replacement cart, need a different sized cart or have questions, contact Republic Services.

Bulky and hazardous waste

  • Republic Services will continue to collect batteries placed inside a baggie on top of the recycling cart.
  • For bulky item collection and e-waste pickup, call Republic Services at 760-332-6464 starting July 1.
  • Household hazardous waste is handled by CleanEarth. You can drop off household hazardous waste at their collection facility or schedule a pickup. Learn more on the city's website.

Why is the city switching waste haulers?
The city puts this service out to bid about every 10 years. The city received two proposals for the most recent bidding process in 2020, one from Republic and one from EDCO. Both companies were qualified to perform the needed services. After reviewing both proposals, the City Council chose Republic Services.
