We need your help!

National traffic safety trends show a dramatic increase in traffic-related deaths, with the first quarter of 2022 showing the highest number of deaths in two decades.

The City of Carlsbad's traffic safety emergency proclamation allowed us to focus increased resources and attention on the three Es of traffic safety, education, engineering and enforcement, using the framework of the Safer Streets Together Plan.

This would be a great class for newer drivers and anyone who wants some quick tips on how drivers and cyclists can safely share the road. The course will cover new traffic laws that went into effect in 2023, Carlsbad-specific rules related to e-bikes, best practices for sharing the road and avoiding one of the biggest causes of collisions, something called the right hook

The traffic safety workshops are part of the city’s response to declaring a traffic safety state of emergency last August following an over 200% increase in bike and e-bike collisions since 2019.

Since that time, the city has made improvements to over 90 miles of local streets, increased traffic enforcement, expanded its school crossing guard program and reprioritized traffic safety related projects. The city also launched the Safer Streets Together pledge, bringing community members together to commit to safe walking, biking and driving behaviors every day.

About the pledge

  • Add your name to this online form to make the commitment.
  • Show your commitment to others in the community by putting a Safer Streets Carlsbad window cling on your car window.
  • Encourage your neighbors to join in by putting a Safer Streets Together yard sign in front of your home.

These items are available to pick up at all three city library locations, City Hall and Faraday Center.
