Make sure your children know these basic rules to help keep them safe. 

• Cross streets only at the corners. Use crosswalks at traffic signals and stop signs where available. 
• At traffic signals, wait for the pedestrian signal to display the walk sign. 
• Always look left, then right, then left again to make sure no cars are approaching, even with a signal. 
• Wear light or brightly colored clothing. 
• Carry flashlights or wear reflective gear if you are walking at night when it’s dark. 
• Obey all traffic signs and signals.
• Make eye contact with drivers to make sure they have seen you before crossing the street. 
• Be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up. 
• Never run out into the street, or dart between parked cars. 
• Put phones, headphones and other distracting devices down while crossing the street.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has a wide variety of resources, tips and data to help make sure new teen drivers know how to drive safely. Here are a few tips to get started:

• Remove distractions when you are behind the wheel and speak up if you see a friend texting and driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, one in three teens who text say they have done so while driving.
• Take your time. It’s important to slow down and follow speed limits.
• Review and follow the rules of the road. 
• Always share the road with bicyclists and pedestrians. Give at least 3 feet when passing bicyclists.
