We need your help!

National traffic safety trends show a dramatic increase in traffic-related deaths, with the first quarter of 2022 showing the highest number of deaths in two decades.

The City of Carlsbad's traffic safety emergency proclamation allowed us to focus increased resources and attention on the three Es of traffic safety, education, engineering and enforcement, using the framework of the Safer Streets Together Plan.

Topics include:

  • Carlsbad Boulevard and Tamarack Avenue improvements – options for reconfiguring the area around this busy intersection to prioritize traffic safety for drivers, walkers and bicyclists.
  • Traffic & Mobility Commission work plan for Fiscal Year 2023-2024 – review of the commission’s annual work plan of activities to promote mobility and traffic safety.

Carlsbad Boulevard and Tamarack Avenue improvements

The Traffic & Mobility Commission voted April 3 to put this project on its May agenda with the goal of providing a recommendation to the City Council. When the commission first reviewed the options Feb. 6, their discussion did not result in a City Council recommendation.

City staff will present the options again for the Carlsbad Boulevard and Tamarack Avenue intersection improvements project and review traffic study results and other data requested by the commission.

The project is needed to enhance coastal access, improve walking and biking infrastructure, and improve traffic flow along Carlsbad’s busy coastline, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The project was designed to comply with the California Completed Streets Act, the City of Carlsbad’s General Plan Mobility Element and the City of Carlsbad’s Climate Action Plan.

Fiscal Year 2023-24 work plan

Every fiscal year, the Traffic & Mobility Commission prepares an annual work plan that is designed to promote mobility and traffic safety within Carlsbad and to review mobility projects that support the implementation of the city’s General Plan Mobility Element.
