Earlier this week, the City Council extended the local traffic safety emergency for another 60 days, while we continue to implement programs addressing the “three E’s” of traffic safety -  Education, Engineering and Enforcement.

While preliminary data is encouraging, showing a 19% decrease in injury collisions from the start of the emergency through February 2023, we know that trends may change during the busy summer months. More people will be out enjoying summer in Carlsbad, so we will continue to encourage everyone to be safe on our streets, whether they are walking, biking or driving.

Just a few of our ongoing efforts include:

• Improving bike lanes on several streets throughout the city
• Reconfiguring some of the city’s busiest streets, including adjusting the number of lanes and lane widths to manage speed and improve visibility for bicyclists and pedestrians. This effort will also make the streets smoother for everyone who uses them and reduce our long-term pavement maintenance costs.
• Focusing enforcement efforts in high-collision areas, areas where residents have reported concerns and during times where heavy traffic is expected, such as holidays.
• Partnering with schools for more bike and pedestrian safety education. This includes working with all school districts serving Carlsbad to create an on campus bike permit program that would start next fall.
