We need your help!

National traffic safety trends show a dramatic increase in traffic-related deaths, with the first quarter of 2022 showing the highest number of deaths in two decades.

The City of Carlsbad's traffic safety emergency proclamation allowed us to focus increased resources and attention on the three Es of traffic safety, education, engineering and enforcement, using the framework of the Safer Streets Together Plan.

Traffic projects move forward

Post Date:06/07/2023 3:07 PM

This week the Traffic & Mobility Commission advanced several traffic safety projects and initiatives related to improving how people get around Carlsbad.

  • South Carlsbad Climate Adaptation project –
    • As part of a grant-funded study, the commission recommended the roundabout option for completing a 30% conceptual design of how south Carlsbad Boulevard, between Manzano Drive and Island Way could be moved away from the cliffs to protect infrastructure from sea level rise and its hazards.
    • A recent traffic study calculated that traffic will move more efficiently through roundabouts compared to intersections with a traffic signal, even during the highest levels of traffic.
    • The circular design of a roundabout allows vehicles to enter and exit without stopping, reducing delays and eliminating the need for traffic signal changes. This results in improved traffic efficiency and reduced congestion.
    • The City Council will select the preferred design option this summer, allowing the city to complete the grant study by the deadline.
    • No additional work has been included in the city’s fiscal year 2022-23 budget for future phases of this project or for the full length of south Carlsbad Boulevard.
  • Improvements for Tyler Street, from Oak Avenue and Chestnut Avenue in the Village and Barrio area
    • Feedback about initial options and what’s important to consider as the project is designed can be given on this online survey, open until June 18
  • An updated project priority list for the Sustainable Mobility Plan
    • The city is working on a plan to fund and construct the improvements outlined in the Sustainable Mobility Plan, which help reduce vehicle miles traveled in the city, mitigate the impacts of growth and development, and accommodate all the ways people get around the city.
    • New criteria were incorporated to prioritize transportation projects since the plan was adopted in January 2021, such as the latest traffic safety data, added emphasis on connections to school sites and major east-west corridors.
    • Preliminary concept plans will be designed for approximately 10 of the top priority projects and cost estimates for all 96 project areas.
  • Traffic calming plans, which include speed cushions, for five residential streets:
    • Victoria Avenue, from Pontiac Drive to Haverhill Street
    • Highland Drive, from Carlsbad Village Drive to Buena Vista Way
    • Nueva Castilla Way, from La Costa Avenue to Levante Street
    • Circulo Sequioa, from Camino Junipero to Avenida Diestro
    • Celinda Drive, from Carlsbad Village Drive to Chestnut Avenue
