This page highlights some of the major construction projects happening in Carlsbad. It does not include projects from non-city utilities and private development. See the look ahead map.

Because construction work is very dynamic, schedules can change for a wide variety of reasons, such as weather, availability of supplies and other factors.  If we expect a project to have a significant impact, we typically notify those in the immediate vicinity 72 hours in advance.

For projects along major roadways, you can look for digital message boards for notices about upcoming work that could cause delays or detours.

Although construction can cause temporary inconveniences, the good news is that we’re maintaining and improving our infrastructure year-round, and by keeping things up to date, we save money in the long run by avoiding emergency repairs. Regular maintenance also helps ensure you don’t experience a last-minute water shut off or road closure.

Construction on crosswalks along Carlsbad Blvd

    Post Date:09/01/2023

After Labor Day, the City of Carlsbad will begin construction on pedestrian improvements along Carlsbad Boulevard at Cherry and Sycamore avenues. Following the completion of these two crosswalks, crews will move on to Maple, Oak, and Hemlock avenues.

    What to expect during construction

    • Traffic control will be in place impacting bike and car lanes.
    • Crosswalks will be temporary closed.
    • The work is happening in stages to ensure people can access the beach at other crosswalk locations safely during construction.
    • Access to driveways will be maintained.
    • Construction equipment will be stored nearby with construction noise during work hours, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
    • Please use caution in the area, slow down and share the road.
    • All intersection work is expected to be complete in early 2024.

    Upcoming improvements
The coastal areas in general tend to see a higher rate of collisions than other parts of town. These improvements will provide additional safety benefits for people walking, biking and driving and help make the coast more accessible.

Work to one of the locations along north Carlsbad Boulevard is already complete. Safety enhancements being made to these intersections are similar including:

    • Flashing lights along the ground to help drivers see pedestrians. The lights are activated when a pedestrian pushes the button.
    • Curb extensions (except Maple), which make it easier for drivers to see people walking and reduce the distance people need to cross the street. They do not impact bicyclists in the bike lane.
    • High-visibility crosswalk markings on Carlsbad Boulevard and the side streets.
    • Green painted bicycle lanes to clearly indicate bicycle and vehicle conflict zones.

Thanks for your patience while work is underway as the city provides additional safety benefits for people walking, biking and driving along the coast.
