This page highlights some of the major construction projects happening in Carlsbad. It does not include projects from non-city utilities and private development. See the look ahead map.

Because construction work is very dynamic, schedules can change for a wide variety of reasons, such as weather, availability of supplies and other factors.  If we expect a project to have a significant impact, we typically notify those in the immediate vicinity 72 hours in advance.

For projects along major roadways, you can look for digital message boards for notices about upcoming work that could cause delays or detours.

Although construction can cause temporary inconveniences, the good news is that we’re maintaining and improving our infrastructure year-round, and by keeping things up to date, we save money in the long run by avoiding emergency repairs. Regular maintenance also helps ensure you don’t experience a last-minute water shut off or road closure.

    About

Reconfiguring city streets so people can get around Carlsbad as easily and safely as possible is one of the key priorities in the city’s General Plan.

Since the plan was adopted in 2015, city staff have completed several street improvements along Tamarack Avenue. The city is now ready to proceed with a more permanent change to the character of Tamarack between Carlsbad Village Drive and Carlsbad Boulevard.

Another city plan, the Sustainable Mobility Plan, approved by the City Council in 2021, outlines how the major transportation and mobility policies in the city’s General Plan will be achieved through specific projects and programs. The plan identifies Tamarack as one of several “transformative corridors” that will provide a network of high-quality bikeways, walking paths and transit services.

The Tamarack Avenue Complete Streets Plan will differ from recent street improvements in a few important ways:

    • Tamarack will be considered holistically, rather than focusing on certain intersections and small segments
    • Physical improvements will be more effective than the interim measures in influencing safe behaviors by all road users
    • The community will have an opportunity to participate in the design process from the very beginning
