This week starts the end of the school year for some schools in Carlsbad, and with it there will be many landmark celebrations. From graduations to end of school year parties, June is a time of celebration.
Yet, celebrating can also lead to an increase in underage drinking. The Police Department warns that alcohol is the leading factor in the cause of death among youths and the statistics surrounding underage drinking generally go up during the graduation season.
“Graduation should be one of the most memorable times in your child’s life. Please talk with your graduates about being safe and celebrating their graduation alcohol-free, because a well-deserved celebration should not end in tragedy,” encourages Assistant Chief Christie Calderwood.
The Police Department would also like to remind adults that providing teens with alcohol or hosting underage drinking parties is against the law. Adults who ignore these responsibilities can face mandatory fines under the Social Host Ordinance.
Calderwood adds, “Drinking by teens can put them, and their friends, in real danger.”
