Proposed City Council district maps to be discussed

Post Date:11/24/2021 11:51 AM

The City of Carlsbad’s Independent Redistricting Commission will start looking at draft maps at its Dec. 16 meeting, and a new online map-making tool is now available for community members who would like to create a map for consideration.

Independent Redistricting Commission
Thursday, Dec. 16
4 p.m.

The new map-making tool is called Maptitude and has more data built in than the other map-making tools that are already available, the DistrictR online tool, a paper map kit and an excel spreadsheet.

Proposed maps provided to the city by Dec. 1 will be reviewed by the city’s professional demographer prior to the Dec. 16 meeting. At that meeting, the demographer will present its draft maps and go over maps submitted by the public. Public maps received after Dec. 1 will still be provided to the commission, but the demographer’s review won’t be provided until the next meeting.

How to provide input on maps
All maps submitted to the city will also be posted to the city’s website for the public to review.

  • Regular business meetings of the commission have time set aside for public comment, and two more public hearings are scheduled for the sole purpose of getting input.
  • Members of the public may also provide comments to the commission via email

How to submit maps

Online: Residents can draw maps using DistrictR or Maptitude, online mapping tools that let you draw just your community or all four districts. These tools can be found on the City of Carlsbad website.

Paper: Maps can also be created using a paper mapping kit and an excel spreadsheet

About the commission

The Carlsbad City Council decided to appoint an independent commission to make the final decision about a new City Council district map. Members were chosen from applications at random based on criteria established by state and the City Council. The commission has regular meetings that are open to the public. You can see the schedule here
