Stay fit, manage stress or learn something new in the new year

If you’re looking for ways to stay active and engaged this winter and spring, the City of Carlsbad is offering some safe, fun and exciting programs for people of all ages. Our Winter/Spring Community Services Guide is now available for online viewing and registration.

Check out options including adult and youth classes, preschool, sports leagues, senior activities, spring break camps and more. Class sessions begin in January and run through spring. Staff is closely monitoring all recommended COVID-19 precautions and has protocols in place for all activities.

Here is a small sample of some of the adult classes offered this session:

  • Chair Yoga combines stretching, building core strength, and improving your balance all from a seated position.
  • Yoga Circle will lift your spirit with a gentle, yet strengthening, yoga class where you will learn a flow of postures designed to enhance flexibility and improve balance, as muscles, bones and joints get stronger.
  • Tai Chi Chuan participants will experience a slow non-strenuous exercise that places emphasis on balance, flexibility and ease of movement for the continuation or improvement of health for the rest of your life.
  • Country Line Dancing is boot stomping fun for beginners with some line dancing experience and intermediate line dancers. Improve cardio fitness, muscle strength and coordination while listening to country music with some pop, R&B and Latin. 
  • The Culinary Lab is for foodies who want to whip up fun, food, health and science to optimize an epicurean lifestyle. Become the master of your taste buds while learning the health benefits of creative dishes made with fresh ingredients. Channel your culinary artist while sharpening your science acumen.

Here is a small sample of some of the kids classes offered this session:

  • Sewing at Leo Carrillo Ranch is for kids ages 7 to 11 of all skill levels. Beginners will learn the basics of how to thread machines, finish and iron seams, and add closures (snaps, buttons, zippers, ties), while more experienced campers can learn how to cut from a pattern and make a simple garment.
  • Painting Like the Masters is for young artists who want to experiment with the art techniques of master artists. Students will paint with acrylics on canvas to create a masterpiece in the styles of Monet, Van Gogh, Matisse and others, while learning about the lives of great artists. Ages 6 to 10.
  • Japan Karate Federation offers families and beginning students an opportunity to train in an authentic martial arts environment. Students will develop self-discipline, self-respect and confidence as they begin to advance through rank by learning kicks, blocks, punches, strikes, and kata. Please visit japankaratefederation.com.   • Friday Night Hoops will help improve basketball skills in elementary school students, whether your child is a beginner or an intermediate player. Learn proper shooting techniques, leadership, ball handling, transition game, passing and decision making, and participate in fun, high-energy scrimmage games. Grades 1 to 6.

Spring break camps 
Spring camps for kids are offered three different weeks to coincide with the Carlsbad, Encinitas and San Marcos Unified school districts’ spring breaks. 

  • Ecological adventures camp at Leo Carrillo Ranch. Kids ages 7 to 16 will discover nature through hikes, nature walks and environmental projects. Camp runs March 28 to April 1.
  • Basketball camp at Stagecoach Community Center. Kids ages 6 to 13 will learn fundamental skills to put them on the fast track to becoming a confident basketball player. Camp runs April 4 to 8.
  • LEGO creations, inspired by Leo Carrillo Ranch. This two-day camp is for ages 5 to 13 Kids will construct their very own historic ranch house. A 175-piece LEGO set is included. Camp runs April 19 and 20.
  • Kidz/Explorer camp at Pine Avenue Community Center. For kids ages 5 to 13, this is a well-rounded full day camp that offers sports, crafts, waterplay, fieldtrips and so much more. Camp is from April 18 to 22.
