Compensation

• Base Salary:
  • Mayor: $29,457 / year
  • City Council: $28,257 / year
  • City Treasurer: $14,248.32 / year 
  • City Clerk: $14,248.32 / year 

• Additional Pay for Community Development Commission:
  • Mayor and Council: $75 per meeting (max $150/month)
• Additional Pay for Water Board:
  • Mayor and Council: $100 per meeting (max $300/month)

Car allowance

• $5,400 / year (Mayor)
• $4,200 / year (City Council)
• $2,400 / year (City Treasurer)
• $2,400 / year (City Clerk)

Retirement options

Elected Officials have the option of participating in the California Public Employees’ Retirement system (CalPERS) or the MidAmerica APPLE Deferred Compensation Plan. The employee cost per paycheck on a pretax basis for CalPERS is 7.5% - 8% and for APPLE is 3.75%.

Medicare

If hired after (3/31/1996) is 1.45% of payroll.

Group health insurance

You have a choice of several medical plans available through CalPERS. Premium costs are shared by employee and the city.

Dental and vision insurance

You can choose from an HMO or PPO dental plan through United Concordia, and two options for vision insurance through VSP. 

Flexible spending accounts (FSA)

A flexible spending account allows you set aside pre-tax dollars to reimburse yourself for eligible health care and/or dependent care expenses.

Life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment insurance

City of Carlsbad provides basic life insurance and basic accidental death and dismemberment insurance of two times your annual base salary at no cost to you. You have the option to purchase additional life insurance for yourself, your spouse or children.
