New trees planted at Stagecoach Park

Post Date:10/18/2022

Twenty-seven new trees were planted Monday at Stagecoach Community Park, courtesy of the Arbor Day Foundation, through a collaboration with the City of Carlsbad and the nonprofit Tree San Diego.

  • The Arbor Day Foundation covered the cost of the trees – just under $5,000 – and provided 50 volunteers who planted them at the park Monday morning. The volunteers were attending the foundation’s Sustainable Brands conference in Carlsbad.
  • The City of Carlsbad provided the space and expertise for the tree planting and Tree San Diego helped the city choose the right varieties for the site.
  • A variety of species were planted including Deodor cedars, Vinegar trees, Willows, Camphor trees, California pepper trees and Canary Island pines.
  • The trees will help support the City of Carlsbad’s Community Forest Management Plan, which guides how the city will maintain and increase its overall “forest canopy” – an integral part of a well-planned, safe and comfortable city.

“These trees will benefit our community in so many ways, not just by enhancing the beauty of Stagecoach Park, but environmentally and financially, too,” said Michael Tully, a park planner with the city’s Parks & Recreation Department. “We’re grateful to the Arbor Day Foundation and Tree San Diego for being such great partners in this work.”

Over the next 50 years, the new trees will provide about $19,635 worth of benefits to the city. According to the U.S. Forest Service’s iTree software, Carlsbad’s new trees will also:

  • Improve air quality by reducing 477,724 pounds of atmospheric carbon dioxide. (For context, an average car generates about 11,000 pounds of carbon dioxide each year.)
  • Intercept a total of 1,026,142 gallons of rainfall that could otherwise lead to soil erosion and runoff.
  • Prevent 106,787 gallons of stormwater runoff that could pollute local waterways.

The trees will also provide shade and energy conservation and create habitat for local wildlife.
