The following is a brief overview of information needed prior to qualifying for a business license in the City of Carlsbad.

Federal Employer Identification Number
This number may be obtained from the Internal Revenue Service, 800-829-4933.

Seller's Permit
A seller's permit number is required for all persons selling tangible property that is subject to State Sales and Use Tax. Prospective business owners must register for a seller's permit online at www.boe.ca.gov. State Tax Identification Number
Businesses are required to obtain a state identification number to report employee taxes to the state. For more information, contact the Employment Development Department or call 888-745-3886.

Health Permit
A copy of the County of San Diego Health Department certificate must accompany all applications for hot or cold catering trucks.

Contractor's License
Contractors must supply their state contractor's license number and a copy of their license.

Fictitious Names
The owners of a business who use a fictitious name (one other than his/her own name) for their business must clear the name through the County Clerk to ensure no one else is using it. For more information contact the San Diego County Clerk, 141 E. Carmel St., San Marcos, CA 92078, 760-940-6858.

The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is the statistical classification standard underlying all establishment-based federal economic statistics classified by industry. The classification covers the entire field of economic activities and defines industries in accordance with the composition and structure of the economy. Sole Proprietors
Sole proprietors must furnish their social security and driver's license numbers.
