City of Carlsbad Police Explorer Program

Explorers supplement some non-critical duties of police officers. Explorers are used for traffic control at city events and emergencies, extra staffing for disasters, lost children or evidence searches, and many assignments around the police facility. They participate on ride alongs. Explorers are considered emergency workers and are on-call for emergencies. Additionally, the Explorer program:

  • Provides experience to help young people mature and prepare them to become responsible and caring adults
  • Gives young people practical experience in law enforcement
  • Engages young people in program activities centered on career opportunities, life skills, citizenship, character, education, and leadership and to develop the whole person
  • Explorers experience positive leadership from adult and youth leaders and have the opportunity to take on leadership roles
  • Explorers have a chance to learn and grow in a supportive, caring, and fun environment
