This week starts the end of the school year for schools in Carlsbad and with it there will be many landmark celebrations.  From graduations to end of school year parties, June is a time of celebration.

Yet, celebrating can also lead to an increase in underage drinking. The Police Department warns that alcohol is the leading factor in the cause of death among youths and the statistics surrounding underage drinking generally go up during the graduation season.

“Let’s work together to keep these occasions joyous and to help us prevent alcohol related tragedies,” encourages Assistant Chief Mickey Williams.

The Police Department would also like to remind adults that providing teens with alcohol or hosting underage drinking parties is against the law.  Adults who ignore these responsibilities can face mandatory fines under the Social Host Ordinance.

Williams adds, “One bad decision can cause a lifetime of consequences. Please make safe, alcohol-free choices this graduation season.”
