FINAL UPDATE: Fatal Injury Traffic Collision, Basswood Avenue at Valley Street

On August 7, 2022, at 5:45 p.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department was called to the intersection of Basswood Avenue at Valley Street due to a traffic collision involving a Toyota 4-Runner and an electric bicycle. The bicyclist was transported to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries the following day.

On May 25, 2023, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office charged and arraigned the driver of the 4-Runner, 42-year-old Lindsay Turmelle of Carlsbad, for 192 (c) (2) PC, Vehicular Homicide. The Police Department’s Traffic Division and the California Highway Patrol’s Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) conducted the investigation. 

Serious Injury Traffic Collision, Basswood Avenue at Valley Street 

On August 7, 2022, at 5:45 p.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department was called to the intersection of Basswood Avenue at Valley Street due to a traffic collision involving a vehicle and an electric bicycle. On arrival, officers found a 35-year-old female cyclist injured near the intersection of Basswood Avenue and Valley Street. Traveling on the electric bicycle with the female was a 16-month-old female. The 16-month-old female did not appear to be injured. The female cyclist was riding a black electric bicycle at the time of the collision. The driver of the vehicle, a 42-year-old female, was operating a 2022 white Toyota 4Runner. The driver of the 4Runner remained at the scene. The identity of the injured cyclist is being withheld at this time.

The cause of the collision has yet to be determined. Drugs or Alcohol are not considered to be a factor in the collision. The intersection of Basswood Avenue and Valley Street was closed for several hours so investigators could process the collision scene. The Carlsbad of Carlsbad Police Department is seeking additional witnesses to the collision.
