Shopping safety tips

Post Date:11/17/2023

As the holiday season approaches, an influx of shoppers is expected to frequent our popular shopping areas. With this surge, there's a heightened risk of holiday shopping-related crimes, along with increased local road traffic.

Throughout the holiday season, the City of Carlsbad Police Department will increase patrol in Carlsbad's primary shopping areas. Our focus is to prevent shopping-related crimes such as theft from vehicles, thefts from shoppers, shoplifting, and fraudulent activities. Additionally, our increased presence will remind all road users to adhere to safety regulations and watch out for one another's well-being.

If you’re headed out to shop:

  • Pack your patience. Shopping areas will be crowded.
  • Park in well-lit areas to minimize the risk of theft or vandalism.
  • Avoid leaving valuable items visible in your car. Lock them in the trunk or take them with you.
  • Always lock your car and take the keys. Check twice that it is locked.
  • Stay alert. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Stay mindful of suspicious behavior and keep your belongings close.
  • Use the buddy system. If possible, shop with a friend or family member. There's safety in numbers, and it can be helpful for watching out for each other.
  • Secure your purse or wallet. Keep your purse zipped and hold it close to your body. Wallets should be in a front pocket or a secure, inner compartment of your bag.
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Use credit or debit cards and only carry the cash you need. This minimizes losses if your wallet is lost or stolen.

If you’re on the road:

  • Respect the rules of the road, even in parking lots.
  • Drive slowly in parking lots and follow directions.
  • Watch for pedestrians and bicyclists.
  • Stop at crosswalks. Give pedestrians the right-of-way.
  • Stop completely at stop signs and traffic signals.
  • Avoid distractions and always be aware of who and what is going on around you.

Let's work together to keep the holiday season jolly, safe and secure.
